Modern replacement of dated kitchen with eye catching bespoke splashback

The Brief
The clients moved into a house with a brand new farmhousey type of kitchen. Although not their style they lived with it, but really wanted a modern, minimalist kitchen. After research they knew they wanted a clean, handleless look in black and white.  Originally they wanted an island, but the design process revealed a much better use of space would be a breakfast bar.

The Result
A handlesless kitchen in white gloss full of character with a wow factor splashback. The finishing touch to the breakfast bar is a raised glass shelf which gives extra dimensionality to the kitchen, and also separates the cooking and preparation area from the relaxation and eating area.

The central feature of the kitchen above the range cooker is the brightly coloured splashback from Opticolour, which the clients instantly loved. As well as two Le Mans corner cupboard systems the kitchen has pan drawers, mains pop ups in the work tops and a double sized fridge with useful shelving above. Another feature is the half curved unit which supports the breakfast bar.

The clients chose a subtly flecked black Mistral worktop both for the look and the fact that any future slight scratches or marks can be easily sanded out and repaired.

Black Himalaya porcelain floor tiles laid in an intricate pattern complete the look.

The Feedback
‘We absolutely love the kitchen, we get loads of compliments, even from people who don’t know we’ve had a new kitchen. It has changed the way we use the house, as we spend a lot more of our time now in the kitchen.  A particular hit with us and friends are the wooden stakes which keep the pan drawers tidy and stop the plates/pans from moving around’.
